The government also receives thousands of questions about the railway almost every day. The Centre has now answered a question on cancellation of train tickets.

Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Chowdhury also questioned the cancellation fee on train waiting list tickets.

During the winter session of Parliament, Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Choudhary had questioned the cancellation fee on tickets on the waiting list in trains. He said that even though the Railways cancels the tickets in the waiting list due to lack of seats, cancellation fee is also charged on those tickets. Is the government aware of this IRCTC rule? Is the government planning to withdraw this cancellation fee?

Indian Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnav responded

In response, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that railway clerkage charges on waiting list tickets. Like other services, the revenue collected by the Railways on ticket cancellation is used to meet the cost of maintenance and operation of the railways, he said.

Explaining why the waiting list is prepared, the Railway Minister said that if the confirmed or RAC ticket is canceled, the arrangement is to ensure that no seat in the train is empty at the last moment. He said passengers on the waiting list can travel on another train on the same route under the alternative scheme.
